Commuter Accounts are IRS-regulated employee-funded accounts for either parking or transit expenses. This allows participants to set aside pre-tax funds to save on work-related commuting expenses. Elections can be changed monthly, depending on personal use of the benefit.
- Per IRS rules, parking- and transit-dedicated amounts are not interchangeable. That is, you cannot use money set aside for transit on parking or vice vera. You CAN make two separate payroll deductions, however, if you need to use both.
- For example, if you pay for parking at a park-and-ride lot and also pay for a bus pass separately, you could use commuter benefits for both. The bus pass would count toward the transit limit, and the parking fee would count toward the parking limit.
You can use your MyChoice® Accounts Commuter Account to pay for eligible transit and parking expenses. If you don’t use all the money, it stays in your account year over year. However, if you separate from your employer, any unused funds will be forfeited.
Please note that the IRS sets limits on the amount you can contribute to a Commuter Account each year. Consider this carefully when setting your contribution amount to ensure you take full advantage of the pre-tax benefits!
